The main difference is that the innotab has a mp3 player and a video player calender and notebook the leappad does not. The leappad has a built in camera and video making function that the innotab does not have built in but you can buy the kidizoom camera separate and exchange the sd card. Speaking of sd card the leappad had 2gb on board memory and the innotab has 64mb but can except up to a 16 gb sd card.
The leappad has far more content available at this time than the innotab but only plays content made by leapfrog. You can add your own movies in the avi format to the innotab and mp3 . The leappad is also backward compatible to the explorer if you already own it the innotab is not to the mobigo even though a good portion of the content is the same. The innotab has motion sensor technology to play games moving the innotab to interact with the game.
I purchased the innotab for my 3 soon to be 4 yro for his birthday in dec. He would enjoy the mp3 player and video player far more the camera was the deciding factor. I sure your children will be happy with what ever you choose so try not to stress yourself out to much about it
