It is perhaps the wealthiest of Miami's large suburbs; mostly large homes with a downtown district of luxury highrises & office buildings. It has its own upscale shopping district -- Miracle Mile. Unfortunately the only part that has easy access to downtown Miami is along US-1: The University & Douglas Road Metro stations. There's a shuttle from Miracle Mile to Douglas Rd. Unless you're a student in the UM dorms you'll need a car to get pretty much anywhere. Miami's shopping is not downtown -- it is in the suburbs & the giant regional shopping centers. The crime rate is what you'd expect from a wealthy suburb with plenty of police protection.
Coral Gables isn't really a huge area. It's an expensive suburb (plastic surgeons, lawyers, etc.) that's surrounded by the not so nice areas, which is what most of Miami is like. You need a car to go everywhere in Miami. The shopping and everything you need is located all around. Our downtown area will be about 15-20mins of a drive but there isn't really a reason to go there. It's also about 15-20mins away from South Beach, which is where you'll want to go. UM is located right off of US1 which is one of the busiest highways. It's a nice area, very busy. It's pretty upscale but you can travel a little farther away and see normally-priced things.
