I currently work in the Information technology field in an insurance company as a help desk administrator for the past seven years. I am considering a career change to become a corporate legal counsel. I know I do not want to do help desk work much longer, but besides becoming an IT Manager there are no other fields in IT that I am really interested in. So for the next 30+ I don't see myself working in IT.
About three years ago, I was considering going into the legal field. In those three years I have worked on a degree in Business Management. Now I am seriously considering going to law school in the fall to work on a career change to become a corporate lawyer. I am 27 years old, so I do have time on my side.
With that said, what are the pros and cons of such a career change? Working in IT versus being a corporate legal counsel? Is IT the best field to be in going forward over the years versus being a corporate lawyer.
Some people tell me stay in IT, IT is always in demand. I just don't feel the same about IT when I first started out 8 years ago.
Thanks

What youll find is that as of right now and probably for the foreseeable future, the legal field is saturated. Law schools have been drastically over producing lawyers and fudge their numbers to keep students comming. This coupled with softwear that can do much of the work that a lawyer can they are in less and less demand. From the paralegal/legal assistant to the lawyers themselves are seeing a continually tough job market while IT is enjoying its heyday.
As you know, going to law school will require that you pay tuition for three years. During that time you will not be making any money. Law school is very expensive. You may also have read about how difficult it is for law school graduates to get jobs, and how little law school graduates are being paid these days.
If you are truly miserable working in IT, you might want to think about an alternative other than law school. Perhaps you could work on an MBA. You might want to talk with a career counselor. Community colleges and technical colleges usually have career counselors who will talk with people about career options even though they are not students at the school.
Do a SEARCH here in Yahoo Answers about that subject. The news is not good.
Google: "student sues law school".
Forget law - we already have way too many unemployed legal professionals with not enough jobs to go around.
