1. Just to confirm. On the front of the CD Rom Drive it says: CD RW, correct?
2. How old is the computer? It could be you are using the wrong format (there is: +R and -R drives).
3. Which specific drive (manufacturer) is it?
Hi - you don't mention what OS you are using, so I'm going to assume Windows XP or Vista. The easiest way to write data files to a CD-R is to put in the blank disc, then drag and drop files onto the drive - open My Computer, click and hold on a file, move it on top of the CD drive, then release. After you have dropped all the files you want to burn, right-click on the CD drive, and choose (can't remember the exact phrase) "Write Files to Disc", or "Burn Files to Disc"
This is not the best way to make CD's, and if you want to make music CD's, this will not work. There are a lot of commercial software packages to do these tasks, but there is a free one that we install in all our student computing labs, and it gets great reviews from our students. It is called CDBurnerXP:

It's menu driven - takes a few minutes to get used to, but a very capable (and free) software package.
So, you dragged the files to the CD? If you did you should see on the right side of the screen that you it says you can burn.
This drag and drop thing is utter rubbish.
Use Nero Express.
Simple is best.
maybe the CD-R's are incompatible? perhaps it will work if you try a different brand of disk?
