weight loss question...?

To maintain my weight I have to eat about 1,400 calories. I've been trying to lose some weight and I remembering hearing that to lose weight you should cut back on about 500 calories a day...but that would out me at 900 calories a day! I know anything under 1,200 calories is starving- so I've just been eating 1,200 calories a day.

Should I go down to 900 calories?
