Black smoke is common, and from incorrect fuel mixture. Could be injectors, overloaded or a dirty air cleaner. My experience is that a dirty air cleaner is very common in gen sets in dusty conditions. It will also show up as large electric motors starting up cause the genset to slow because it cannot deliver a reserve of power.
White smoke is not so common. Fuel not burning properly. Most likely, fuel starvation with dirty fuel filters. Incorrect fuel timing.
