can i transplant a 1980's version small block into a 95 pickup. i understand that i will have to change everything that bolts on to the long block from the old engine, but is it a bolt up to the trans? will the 95 intake and ignition bolt up? what problems are involved?
thanks
Update:the reason i want to put an older engine in is that i have 3 360's and 1 318 from the 80's.

yes you can but the intake is different and the transmission will interchange, the difference in the engines though is one is internally balanced and the other one is externally balanced, but they will bolt up,the bolt pattern is the same on those, the 360 would be a the better choice on engines though, you can get a good performance gain form the older engine with more money, what ever you hae to work with can be made to work with minimum effort though, good luck.
The main problem you will have is the engine mounts and induction system. The induction system has been covered. The magnum engine mounts are on the side of the block, and the older LA engines have no provision for drilling and tapping. The magnum engine does have the standard mounting ears at the front of the block, so fitting a magnum in an older vehicle would be less of a problem as far as boltup is concerned.
You will have to put the magnum heads on the older engine for the intake to bolt up.
Too many changes to suit me, but I am old and like to do it the easy way now. I'd go to a salvage yard and find a good magnum engine, and install without any problems.
The intake is different due to the heads. The 93 and newer small blocks were referred to as magnum engines. They had a large horse power increase over the previous years of small blocks. I wouldn't put the old engine in because of the lower performance. The tranny should bolt on but you may need to replace the flex plate. Why do you want to put the old engine in.
I think you will be getting into something that is more trouble then its worth. First, you don't know if the trany will line up to the engine block.
The engine motor mounts will probably not line up at all to the engine frame mounts. Radiator hoses will be a real challenge in itself. Then you have wiring issues to contend with.
