we have seen the salted seas
become crust beneath our feet
we have tended crops doomed to fail
because the water is poisoned
the soil infertile, sun-baked clay
we have watched cancers take children
and wither them slowly down to husks
on our knees at bedside we pray for mercy
but we can not forgive us
and there is no one left to pray to
the gods had someplace they had to go
we were a small insignificance
an experiment that failed centuries ago
and in the final age of mankind on earth
we clutch dearly to the fear
that heaven will not take us
lest we all become
apathetic
