I have a chance to get a new guitar and I'm wondering which to go with. all my favorite guitarists (david gilmour[ of pink floyd], Jimi hendrix and stevie ray vaughn) have used strats, but I know that les pauls are very popular also. I just want to know if anyone has a preference or advice or whateverp.s. I don't have a set price range since my parents have agreed to buy it for me.. I've had both and loved them. The Les Paul sounds a bit thicker to me with more sustain, but you can get that out of the Strat too with a good processor. I generally like the Strat better for the same reasons you mentioned (Hendrix, Gilmour, Vaughn, lots of others), and it's lighter too, which you will come to appreciate, but honestly if you play for any length of time you'll end up owning at least one of each anyway. Get a good effects processor (doesn't have to cost a lot) and an American Strat if you can afford it, that's what I would do if money were no object.
