when i put the hvac settings on recirculate interior air, air is fine. when i turn off recirculate, air doesn't smell so good.
is my cabin air filter bad?
(i know the best way to tell is to look at the cabin air filter. but it's a pain in the neck to check it in my subaru impreza.
thanks)

Usually recirculated and fresh air go through the filter. Maybe subaru diffrent. If you got more than 30k miles or 2 years since last change it is due.
You can limp your stinky air filter out a little longer by disinfecting it. Mold and mildew cause the smells, using Lysol kills that smell. With the air on high, spray the Lysol into the HVAC's air intake, which is between your windshield and hood, on the out side of your car. PS: they make very nice smelling Lysol smells now!
I just tried Michael's trick the other day using Febreeze, works like a champ!
Yes, it may be because of bad or worn out air filter. For more information or if you are looking for good quality cold air intakes visit following link.
