American Girl inaccuracies...?
Sorry before I left out the doll, Cecile, 1853 was the time period, New Orleans is the place. Slavery was not officially abolished until 1865, yet the story takes place before even Lincoln's Emancipation Approximation. How was she not a slave? I did not read the book so I do not understand...I just found out about this doll. AG seems to be slipping....

There were significant numbers of free blacks before emancipation and the Civil War, and a variety of ways to legally attain freedom going back to before the American Revolution. Search "free blacks before emancipation" to learn more.
