Sleep paralysis is pretty common, and usual only last for a few seconds, but by most accounts it feels much longer, and is terrifying.
As far as seeing a hooded figure, a "normal" (I use that almost sarcastically) person would say that you were just dreaming.
Some paranormal investigators believe that in the moments coming out of sleep, or going into sleep, we are most aware of psychic phenomenon.
I once heard the voice of a girl screaming as her mother beat her while I was drifting in and out of sleep. I felt like that was more like remote hearing as opposed to viewing.
Probably the strangest paranormal sleep activity I've had was waking up inside a dream, after being sedated in my first dream. It was very much like something from Inception.
My friend experiences this often. Being paralyzed in bed and hearing/feeling the devil/demons around you and you can't even scream. I've never experienced this but from what I've heard, it sounds terrifying. I have, however, been woken up from a deep sleep because I felt someone standing over me- so close that I woke up. No one was home except me so all I could do was curl up and close my eyes as tightly as possible until I fell asleep. Scary...
I wouldn't know, I was sleeping at the time.
