My 17 year old son is a carpenter apprentice. He travels to his place of work on a motorbike and has social, domestic and pleasure insurance. His employer wants him to work on a site away from his normal place of work around 45 minutes away. He is unable to carry any tools, plus I don't think his insurance covers him to use his bike for work purposes. He has tried to speak to his employer and was told that if he doesn't do as he is told then he might as well not bother turning up again. He is the only person at the business who is expected to use his own vehicle to go out on site. He has passed his car test but cannot afford insurance as he is so young. The business offered to give him a van but he would have to insure it himself as their insurance does not cover anyone under 21. Does anyone know if there are any specific rules of apprentices using their own vehicles to travel to a site on their own? Is the fact that his insurance doesn't cover him for work purposes enough for him not to have to travel. He loves working out on site but we are concerned about the travel arrangements.

Um, I think this is called commuting. Going to and from your place for work on your motorbike whether the place of work is local or is 45 minutes away.
The boss is being quite reasonable because if your son is unwilling to travel to the other site, he is not much use to the employer
