I have to replace my distributor, but i am not sure how to do the timing. If i replace the thing, then call a mobile auto electrician, how much would they charge to come out and set the timing? is there anything i could stuff up?

You don't need an electrical specialist to set the timing on an engine (assuming it's even adjustable. Very few left that are). And if you don't know how to set the timing, then yeah, you'll probably stuff up the installation. Labor rates vary quite a bit, but mobile techs tend to be cheaper, because most of them can't hold a regular job.

If you do decide to do it yourself the idea is to put the new one in so the rotor is in the exact same position. Thing is it is goind to turn right before you get it all the way in when the gears spline together. You didnt say what make or model but you will probably have to get the drive for the oil pump to line up into the bottom of the distributor gear. Once its all done its still going to be off a bit and need adjusting. Your best bet is to just pay someone to install the thing so you dont "stuff" it up.
