Please note that I am not interested in being a doctor this question is simply out of curiosity. I watched this film called No Strings Attached and the main character is a resident and all I kept wondering is at what age do medical students typically become residents at a hospital and for how long?

A physician in the US attends university for four years. (Often age 18-21 or 22) Then medical school is four years (22-25 or 26) Internship is a year, and then residency is an additional 3-7 years depending upon the specialty for which one applies and is accepted. One's residency determines one's specialty. Residency may be anywhere between ages 26-29 or 27-33. Many of us are completing residencies when we are older than that. After residency, some physicians choose to complete a fellowship in a subspecialty which can be 2-3 additional years. Some sub-specialists do not begin working as attending physicians until they are 35 plus. Best wishes.
