my friend got caught text messaging in class and was sent to the principals office. my principal took her phone and won't give it back for 2 days! is she allowed to do that?
Yep, the principal sure can confiscate a phone. Look at your student handbook. And it doesn't even have to be in there if it is a distraction.
Actually, you are lucky that you get to bring a phone to school, some schools will not allow it at all. (Which is ridiculous in my opinion.) At least your friend is getting her phone back in a couple of days.
that what happens in my school its not only if the princpal sees, its if any teachers see. then the only way you get it back is if you parents pick it up for you

Unfortunately, yes the principal can do that. You may want to look up the rules for cell phone use in your student handbook -- and the punishments.

Unfortunately she is allowed to do that. Many schools even have cell phone confiscation plans.

Yes, you were breaking the rules.
I guess so but if her parents came in and started complaining you could probably get it back
