I am an 18 year old New Jersey resident, and i currently attend college in upstate New York. This is the first time I have ever lived outside New Jersey. I've become interested in owning a firearm, but I'm not sure what the easiest legal way to go about it is. I know that an 18 year old New York State resident can walk into any store and purchase a shotgun/rifle legally, and I'm pretty sure without a permit. Can I do the same? Or is there a course or test I must pass first. Thanks to anyone who can guide me in the right direction.

There is no state license requirement for the possession of a rifle or shotgun, so long as the rifle has barrel(s) at least 16 inches in length and the shotgun has barrel(s) at least 18 inches in length. It is unlawful for any person convicted of a felony, other serious offense, or who been certified as not suitable to possess a rifle or shotgun (mentally incompetent) to possess a firearm.
No permit is required for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun (except in New York City). A license to carry or posses a pistol or revolver is required to purchase a handgun.
You must take a Hunters Safety course if you plan on going hunting with the firearm you purchased.
