- I told my parents I was depressed (I have been for years) and they didn't believe me and won't take me to the doctor... so I have to go by myself. Because they don't believe me they won't take me to therapy, so I also have to do that (depending on what the doctor does). Except the problem is, I can't afford it and can only afford pills.
Can doctors prescribe antidepressants or does this have to be carried out by a psychiatrist? Can they be used by themselves or do they need to be taken in conjunction with therapy? And under what circumstances would someone be prescribed with antidepressants?

Depends on your doctor. I had a doctor once prescribe me antidepressants. He did not send me to therapy. I think the only basis he had was my family history of depression. All doctors are different. Just talk to the doc and tell him your situation
I strongly recommend you get your antidepressants from your psychiatrist, I say this because, now a days many regular doctors misdiagnose patients, not to mention they give them the wrong and sometimes unnecessary meds. This happens because they do not specialize in mental health issues. Believe me when I say it would be best for you to see a psychiatrist for your meds and proper diagnosis.
Also, I am glad you are doing what you can to take care of yourself, even though your parents SHOULD BE supportive of this, but I'm glad you are being smart about this.
Remember that when dealing with depression and other mental health disorders, meds work best along with therapy, therapy not only helps you understand what is going on but also helps you learn how to manage your situation for the better.
Good luck friend.
Hi Sophie.
There is an herbal antidepressant available without a prescription called St John's Wort.

You should at least find someone to talk to, instead of keeping things bottled up.
Best wishes.
your doctor will know by talking to you if you are suffering from depression, and yes he/she will prescribe antidepressants for you.
