You cannot externally expand Series 2 units. The WD MyDVR expander only works on Series 3 based TiVos. and some non-TiVo DVRs.

To expand a Series 2, you need to replace the internal drive, or add a second drive. It is recommended you replace the one drive though.

If Tivo supports that then yes an external one would be a good idea.
