I can provide some information about Vitamin D deficiency as I take a daily supplement of 5000 units. There are two fat-soluble forms of Vitamin D: cholecalciferol is made when sunlight falls on the skin for about 15 minutes and is expressed as Vitamin D3; ergocalciferol is the name expressed as Vitamin D2, and is usually found in supplements. Vitamin D deficiency can damage the way bones grow and in children can cause rickets.
I have my Vitamin D3 measured with a blood test about every 3 months. More than 50% of older persons are deficient in Vitamin D without even knowing it. The clinical test to have your Vitamin D measured is called 25-Hydroxy, and costs about $40 to $ 50 extra on a regular blood test. Doctors can prescribe amounts of Vitamin D at levels of 10,000 IU a day for several weeks to build the levels to at least 35ng/dL. This level is considered OK, but most researchers advise levels of at least 50ng/dL in blood serum. I stopped taking Vitamin D supplements for two months to be safe, yet my recent lab test for Vitamin D shows my level at 39ng/dL. I have begun to take supplements again until my Vitamin D levels reaches 50ng/dL.
I do not find any data in my research manuals about low Vitamin D levels causing stomach problems, but who knows. Remember the name 25-Hydroxy if you wish to have your blood tested to include Vitamin D. Of course, Vitamin D and Calcium are partners, so-to-speak to keep one healthy.
I have had two ulcers, and now I have GERD, and I have had 5 to 6 procedures performed on me by Gastroenterologists.
Hope this information helps you.
