I plan on getting a JVC Everio HDD camcorder, and I was wondering if Windows Vista can playback .MOD files without extra software. I simply want to be able to click on the video file and watch it without having to convert it. If anyone owns one or knows the answer please let me know.

Windows Vista is an operating system and cannot play back or do anything - applications running on top of Vista do that stuff.
.MOD files are typically from JVC (and now Panasonic) hard drive or flash memory camcorders. It is a modified MPEG2 - very highly compressed standard definition video - file type.
You need to convert it to something Windows Media Player can deal with. A digital video file conversion tool like StreamClip can make that conversion for you.
