Well, my old XP laptop has "given up the ghost," and I'm getting a new one soon. I've been told Vista is the best, so can I transfer some of my most important files, folders and applications onto a Vista laptop?

hi there
a simple method is to use a usb flash disk.
copy / move the files from the xp machine to the usb drive
then put usb drive in vista machine
regards
Files and folders (music, pics, reports, etc) yes, Programs, application probably not. Vista uses diferent drivers and the programs would need to be vista compatible.Nero 6 isn't, nero 7 is etc.Sort of like how win 95 isn't compatible with xp.But they did update alot of the drivers to work with them. I have a program (shrink&decrypt for burning movies)that works flawlessly on xp, but not at all on vista.
Belkin now do a Vista pass cable fantastically to pass documents from an XP device to a Vista device. expenditures approximately £20 and is accessible at laptop international. I easily have one myself and it works in conjuction with the report pass wizard and particular drivers offered on a cd it particularly is provided with the cable.
Your files yes, but, unless you have the installer for the applications you cant transfer them. Thats not the fault of Vista, you just cant move an installed application.
Files and folder - yes.
Use a memory stick or burn a cd.
There is an tool you can download called "files and settings transfer wizard" which will do all the work for you if you have a memory stick or external drive to copy the archive file to.
Applications - no.
You will have to reinstall them on your new pc.
You can.
Start off by dismantling your old noteboook and finding out what kind of connector the hard drive uses to connect to the motherboard. Once you know, you can purchase an external hard drive enclosure to connect your old hard drive to. (Take the hard drive to your local electronics store and ask them to match the connector with an external hard drive enclosure, if you want.) Once connected, you can now use your old hard drive as a usb external hard drive, effectively recycling your old "junk"
Hope this helps. Good luck to you.
**EDIT**
This is only useful if your computer has completely gone down. A bootable computer should use the USB memory stick option. It's faster and cheaper.
there is a file sharing program u need --am not sure of the name am on xp pro--not a fan of vista sorry -i will look for it and add to this post
Yes dear you can, I have had a lot of problems with Vista period, but hopefully by now they have worked out alot of issues
Yes, you can do it by using a pen drive, or external HD.
