Why can't CO2 form a triple bond with one of the oxygens and a single bond with the other?
Sry if this seems obvious...I'm a little tired today and can't think straight.
The octet numbers around each atom must be preserved
::O=C=O:: <--- this way each atom has 8 electrons
Doing it your way would make the molecule polarized:
+OCO- a kind of zwitterion
