She had kittens yesterday morning, very easy delivery, healthy kittens... this is the first time I've known/owned a cat that had kittens as all my others over the course of my life have been fixed. Anyway, she seems kind of listless and leaves them a lot. She also threw up this morning, though, granted, ever since she had them she's been eating a TREMENDOUS amount of food and she's a small cat. How do I know if she's feeding the kittens enough? There are four of them. They mew somewhat frequently but not CONSTANTLY and slept a good chunk of the night cuddled up to her (until she wandered away again). I just want to make sure this mama and her newborns are healthy..

You might want her to see a vet. Sometimes females can get an infection after birth. She should be eating kitten food & vitamins. several small portions of food a day & of course plenty of fresh water. Be sure the area she is in with the kittens is very clean. If the kittens are constanly vocal, they are hungry & not being fed enough. Kittens need to eat every 2-3 hrs. Your best bet would be to get her to the vet just to be sure.
Not to worry--really. This is normal for a new "Mommy" cat. And, since she just gave birth yesterday morning, she's worn out and very tired. Yes, it is very normal for the queen to leave her litter for short periods of time to herself. As far as her eating, the best thing you can do for her, as a nursing mother, is to start feeding her both canned AND dry KITTEN food. The kitten food is much higher in vitamins, minerals, calcium, protein, carbs, essential fats, and calories. By feeding her kitten food while she is nursing, it will insure that the queen is properly nourished and also provides her with a good quality and an abundance of milk for the kittens. Keep her on the kitten food until the kittens are starting to be weaned--6 to 8 weeks, then cut back on the kitten food gradually by adding adult cat food a little at a time until you have her switched back to ALL adult cat food. If you don't, she will become very FAT, and this could be hazardous to her health.
Yes, I am sure that the kittens are getting fed enough. They are just 24 hours old and won't be nursing that much at any one time--their tiny tummies can't hold that much. Don't worry, your queen is doing fine. The ones that you need to worry about (and this is NOT the case here) is where the queen is so protective that she will NOT leave the kittens at all, and just lay there and allow them to suck her dry all day long. This is NOT good. But, your new "Mommy" is doing just fine---she's just worn out and probably pretty sore from giving birth. Just give her a few days to recouperate, and start feeding her the KITTEN food, and she and her kittens will all be fine. Congradulations on the new "family". Now, as a final thought, after she is done nursing, please have her spayed, and she won't have to go through this stress again. Best of luck to all of you.

my cat had 3 kittens a couple months age and she didnt leave their side for a couple weeks. i would call the vet and tell them about her and see what is up. if she is a young kitten she may not know what to do. just call the vet and you may need to take her in
Does she pick up her kittens and bring them closer when they wander away?
You should take her to the vet...it doesn't sound right.
