Vista and 7 has a utility built in for making DVD's. Sounds like you need a codec pack to play those files correctly on your computer. I would visit filehippo.com and download the codec pack for your specific operating system. Gets us out of jams easily.
To get them to play on Windows media player...
► Video/Audio Codec's ◄
Download & Install -> http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/30...
During the Installation Choose.. Basic, All File Types, Windows Media Player.
Now WMP Will Play most Video/Audio Files Easily.
► Burning DVD's Easily ◄ (For Playback on standard DVD Players)
* Nero Vision - By Far the Best Program To Burn DVD Movies *
* DVD Flick - By Far the Best Free Program To Burn DVD Movies *

DVD Flick Requires IMGBurn To Burn the Movie...
IMGBurn -> http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-11673...
After Downloading & Installing DVD Flick & IMGBurn, Run DVD Flick..
Hit 'Add Title' Up top Right.. Navigate and Select your Movie..
Then hit 'Project Settings' Up Top.. Hit the 'Burning' Tab..
Tick 'Burn Project to Disc' & Hit 'Use As Defaults' & 'Accept'.
If you Wish to Add a Crappy Menu then Hit 'Menu Settings'.
Now Hit 'Create DVD' Up Top.. It Will Begin Transcoding/Converting..
You Can Hit 'Entertain me' & Play Tetris if you wish :P
Once Done IMGBurn will Load & Burn the Movie Automatically..
So Make sure you have a Blank DVD In the Drive Otherwise..
You will have to Transcode it all over again.
Also a stupid message pops up when you start a new project Warning..
You that it will delete the Old Project.. Just hit Yes.
Hope it helps :)
To burn an avi video to a dvd so it will play in any dvd player, I use DVDFlick. It's free and easy to use.
Your question isn't written very well - this isn't reall a file transfer question. You're asking about how to burn an avi file to a dvd, or more accurately "author" it.
As a Computer novice you are going to want to try getting a free copy of Nero, (don't pay they will try to coax you into paying for it) and there is a make a Video DVD option, follow the Graphical interface, and it will make and convert your DVDs, it might take it some time to convert them (I've seen it take 4-8 hours on older machines). if not there are some internet services out there to make DVDs for you.
