I have here a HP G7 1070US with a intel i3 4gb of ram and a 500gb hdd. I just formated the drive and tried to reinstall windows 7 however the computer is so slow I cant even get to install drivers and if i do it freezes. I ran memtest so far and the ram is good. im going to pull the Hdd and run hd tune on it. Im assuming the processor is good because its booting and its not getting hot. What else can I check?
Update:Yup it was the drive. Im supprised that SMART check didn't fail in the laptop and but when I set it up as a external it failed A SMART check?

Because you re installed windows you can rule out the usual virus or whatever.
Because the memory tested out fine I would question the hard drive going bad as strange as it sounds.
I have seen were a computer will run really slow a little while before the hard drive goes bad on it. Listen and see if it has any clicking sounds coming from the drive because that can be another sign of this. If you have a spare drive try that as well.
