Hi, if your computer is staying powered by the power cord, but doesn't charge then the power cord is bad. If the computer isn't even being powered by the power cord, try taking the battery out and turn on the computer without the battery and just the power cord plugged in. If the laptop turns on then the battery is bad. If the laptop doesn't turn on with the power cord, without the battery, then your power cord is bad. Hope this helps and check out my website and blog.
It will die. If the charger isn't bad, the jack connecting the charger to the motherboard (the "hole" you plug the charger into) got disconnected. Or a component in the charging circuit went. In either case you'll have to have it repaired. Find a good repair shop (not a large retailer with a repair "squad" - they don't do that kind of repair, they just send it to HP, and charge you a profit above HP's charge) and have them fix it.
never heard of a lab top.. oh wait. you must mean LAPTOP. Do you keep the laptop plugged in all the time? if so you may have killed the battery. they don't like being plugged in 24/7 and being used for extended periods of time trying to charge and power the laptop at the same time. Looks like you need to invest in a new battery.
when using power cord, dont plug in the battery. IF you are about to charge the battery, turn off your laptop, plug in the battery, and charge it..(the laptop remains off)
use battery only when there is emergency. (no outlet socket)

I'm agree with Doug, and a little extra tips;

Your battery is probably dead or the contacts between the battery and laptop are fried. Hopefully the battery is dead vs the other thing i mentioned.
