Earlier today i posted a question that said my sister gave me a laptop, and i think the battery needed replacing. Now i had some great answers but i forgot to mention that the battery wouldn't even charge anymore.
So now what I'm asking is, Do I need a new battery AND charger?

i had the same problem with my loptop...i went and bought a charger and didnt work...so i said huugh it must be the battery...so i ordered one from dell..and that didnt work...what was wrong with it was that the power jack from the loptop was broken...so have in mind that it can also be the loptop...if i were u i would make sure what the problem is because u do not want to be spending a lot of money...and dont buy a universal charger because they usually burn the motherboard or something...i am telling u this from personal experience...
if your laptop is working fine on mains supply then adapter is ok and replacement of battery can not be advised as there may be a charging circuit problem in the laptop or battery may be faulty.
these two conditions show that you can not decide whether your battery is faulty or not.
As you said "Battery would not charge any more" if charging circuit is faulty it wouldn't charge at all and if it is ok then battery should charge it may not hold charge for even 1 minute but it should charge, that is why i said just make sure your charging circuit is working alright in the laptop before replacing battery pack.
Do the lights on the charger light up? If they don't, or they barely flicker when plugged in alone, it might be the charger. Wal-mart has one for $50 with a lot of different plug-in adapters that hook up to most laptops.
If the lights on the charger are fine, then it's the probably the connector on your laptop which will cost a lot more to repair.
Chargers rarely go bad, replace the battery first, then you will know for sure if you need a charger or not.
James i wouldnt trust your sister, in fact "Pardue", get a new laptop.
same as golfer2 but if that doesnt work yeah maybe you will have to buy a new one sorry.
