If you're connecting a monitor type wire from the laptop to the television, there should be a key to push in order to change to the output instead of the laptop's lcd. it's usually a function button, meaning you'll need to hold down the function key, usually "fn" near the ctrl and alt keys, then look up around the numers or F1-F12 keys for something that looks like a screen, most I've seen look kind of like a box in between 2 vertical lines.
go to your desktop, then right click look for display settings, look and see if you have 2 boxes labeled 1 and 2 if you do highlight 2 then check the box that says extend my desktop to this monitor
