So... I'm still on my very first packet of pills, and I've been doing every little thing by the book! But I'm almost at the 7 day break, so I get my period at the end of this break right? And when I start my 2nd packet, do I still need protection for the first 7 days like I did on the 1st one?

No. As long as you have taken your birth control on time every day then you will be protected during your week of inactive pills (the week you will have your period) and from then on. The only reason you needed extra protection for the first week you started birth control was so the hormones could get in your system and become effective. Now they are in your system and you will no longer need extra protection unless you forget a pill or you are concerned that your sexual partner may have an STD. So this next month and from then on you will not need extra protection against pregnancy.
