I'm writing a paper on characterization, and I'm a bit confused. Is describing someones physical appearance, like height, fitness, facial features, hair, etc., all count as direct characterization? Saying that someone has glossy or well kept hair could say that they're a neat person, which is indirect characterization, but it's a physical trait. Or is direct characterization just the portraying of someones personality alone? I just need someone to break it down for me, I'm so confused! >.<

I would argue that describing how one thinks, feels, and behaves is direct characterization, while describing something of their appearance ( clothes, cleanliness, body language- do they slouch or stand tall and assertive?-and so-on)- is indirect characterization since this helps reveal their personality.
