it depends on the student. when i was in middle school i loved doing crafts, but not those crafts like we did when we were in kindergarten. i wanted to paint and draw. an art club would be great.
if its an active middle schooler, encourage a sports club. or skateboarding. i know that kids are often depicted poorly when they are "skaters" but some of the best people i know skate and love it, and are good at it, and it can keep kids out of trouble if your city has a skate park.
also see if they would be interested in taking up an instrument or some sort of forensics. middle school is the perfect time to pick up debate or public speaking or music because we were still so receptive at that age, we were willing to try anything without fear of looking stupid. that will build confidence with encouragement. plus it'll get them started with some leadership skills.
whatever it is, DON'T force it. if you want your son to play baseball, but he'd rather skate, don't make him feel bad for that. if you want your daughter to sing and she'd rather play the tuba, that's her perrogotive. (sp?) let them choose something they enjoy and in turn you'll get some enjoyment out of watching them flourishing at what they are doing and seeing their excitement oozing out of them.
in middle school, i'd say limit clubs/sports/activities to 2 at a time. more than that will be stretching too thin.
in case you connect the honour Society at your college, grow to be an lively member. Serve on a committee. Take a management place. you will get into many faculties devoid of many extracurricular activities, however the main selective faculties are searching for scholars with confirmed management skill and concern for betterment of their communities. Doing volunteer paintings facilitates. Being a member of a club facilitates. activities help. Does your college have Key club? if so, I recommend becoming a member of and getting some management education and performing some community provider with the club.
My niece just joined a volunteer group to make the school look beautiful (trash, plant flowers, etc.) and she plays volleyball.
They can really do anything they're interested in. Middle schools offer so much more nowadays. They have track/field, basketball, volleyball, dance groups, volunteer groups, music, student council ... just let them decide and if after a while they don't like it, let them try something else.
Well, it depends, if you want something that is good on your application for high school, and you have good grades, you might be looking for the National Jr. Honors Society, or maybe a math team. Also I m just throwing this out there that if you want to go for a sport it doesn't matter if its boring, just do what you love

Whatever you school offers.
I did basketball, volleyball, track, and was in band, also did student council! and was in NJHS!
It was a lot of fun doing all those after school activities, since we couldn't drive that was really the only way to see friends!
my two favorites are sports and/or music
