The unit cools fine and seems to be fairly efficient cost-wise. When the compressor starts up it is slow and makes sort of a scraping noise like it needs greasing. I'm not sure how to identify the brand since the outside plate is faded out - its a physically large unit. It does throw the breaker sometimes. Can the unit be lubricated and ts this expensive service?

what you are hearing is the internal motor starting up in the compressor, and no you cant grease it,if it trips the breaker sometimes then get ready to either replace the compressor or the unit, one thing you can try on it that might help, try installing a hardstart kit on it,all it does is super charge it when it fires up and spins the internal parts faster, finding someone that will do it is another question, most companies want to replace the entire unit but if you can get 2 or 3 more years out of it for 20 to 30 bucks then doit unless you have more money than you need, try finding a repair person that will do it for you
Are you sure that the fan on top of the unit is not making the noise? You could have a problem with the fan blade or the motor. Either way you should have it checked out before it becomes a very costly problem. If it is only a fan or fan motor you may be able to get it repaired for 500 dollars. If the fan fails and destroys the compressor you could be looking at a compressor replacement for 1500 dollars plus the fan or an entire unit replacement for 2500 - 3500 dollars!
no the unit is a sealed compressor no servicable parts. the unit will have to be replaced. check out the governments tax rebates on energy efficent units it will help offset the cost for this year .good luck :0)
Try putting a hard-start kit on the unit. They cost around $35 at any a/c shop. If the compresser is the prob, that will give you a little extra time to save up for a new unit.
ive never seen a compressor that wasnt sealed. the fan motor can sometimes be oiled but most of these are sealed also. might want to make some plans to replace next year if it doesnt leave you sweating before this year is out.
turn it off now till the ice melts off and examine your filter out possibly grimy filter out or thermostat set to low and working each and all the time then turn back on a pair of hour if its ninety out
