how would you make these into complex sentences?

a. King took the time to answer all the criticisms of his ideas.

b. He would have no time for constructive work.

a. People in the city realized the brute fact.

b. They were victims of broken promises.

These two pairs are from one of my hw assignments and i get compound but i dont get complex sentences
