Hello... I'm currently reading a book called "Jacob Have I Loved" by Katerine Paterson.
It's an awesome book... the word phrases and the describing words are very powerful. I just have a question though. The book keep mentions "presence" in many sentences. How do you use this word "presence" in a sentence???? Can you give me some examples too??? Thank you!

There are several ways "presence" can be used.
"His presence at the party was the best part of it". He was physically present there.
"Richard Burton, Leonard Bernstein and Beverly Sills had so much stage presence, it was as if the night, the production and the audience all belonged to them". Here it's another word for "charisma", a manner or bearing that holds an audience in thrall.
"He felt a presence with him in the room". And this use refers to a spirit, a ghost.
"The U.S. military presence was felt". The might of a nation reflected in having troops present in another country.
Love the author and book. Katerine Paterson sounds like Robert Paterson's sister who lusts after Jacob in Twilight. Rofl
Anyway, when using 'presence' in a sentence, you're trying to depict someone's aura or general feel, which can be used to set the theme for a character in a novel. I personally think of 'presence' as the immediate proximity of someone or something.
Some examples include:
"His powerful presence engulfed the room, creating a fearsome, dominant atmosphere"
"Her presence was hardly noticed. Her fragile, meagre frame and her bland, anonymous clothing made eyes sweep over her, hardly recognising she existed."
"It ravaged the landscape, ripping, destroying everything in sight. You could not ignore it's presence, colossal, tall as a skyscraper and wide as a field it was a sight to behold and fear."
The very brief definition of "presence" is..."in close proximity". Although it's usage holds true to that definition, it is sometimes used very loosely and is not always as clear as one would expect.
For example, Her ex-husband's presence at her wedding came as a surprise to most of us. Referring to him actually being there, being heard and being seen.
However a sentence like, I felt the presence of evil in the room, lacks the visual, and audible characteristics of a tangable person or object, yet is equally as appropriate in expressing a feeling that is felt or imagined as being close by.
Hope that helps.
His presence was felt throughout the room.
I was in the presence of the king
The presence of the joker made people laugh
