i cant figure out how to get the lcd screen to work. the only time anything pops up is after i take a picture with the eye piece. how do i get it so that i take pictures from the screen while things move around????? help!?
Update:thanks potoace, that helped me a lot. i tried to try it at walmart, but the girl that i talked to assured me that the battery on it was just worn out and my new one would work as i expected. upon learning more about this camera and seeing the quality there is no way im taking it back. i love it and am very interested in becoming, at the very least, a novice photographer. i wouldnt give it up for anything now, and perhaps if i stick with it and show potential i will purchase a more expensive one some day. i think its a great starter camera for now too. thanks for the advice and compliment on my purchase.

Neither the D40 nor the D80 has the Liveview feature you're asking for.
Trust me, the only current Nikons that have that are the D90, D300, D700, D3, and D3x. The other models are not designed to use the lcd screen as a focusing and composing tool, and only allow you to review the images captured, and see the settings you've chosen.
This is another reason every consumer should try out cameras and other equipment before purchase. That way, you know exactly what to expect and won't be disappointed by features that your device doesn't have.
It's not defective... the feature that you're looking for is called "Live View" which the older DSLR's do not have.
I'm actually a little surprised when people go out and buy DSLR's and discover that they don't have live view when they get home... did you try out the camera at the store before you bought it? Always a good idea!
ok so i got a D80 and so just press menu or ok and it should appear also read your manual i did and it helped if this dosent help go back to the store it may be a defect
