ok. I was talking to my boyfriend on the phone while he was driving (bad i know) I told him not to switch to the left lane cuz he got a warning from a state trooper when i last saw him. it just so happens that he had just switched to the left lane. I say its coincidence and he says its ironic. who is right?

Coincidence
Definitions
Coincidence - something which happens by chance.
Ironic - a situation where the result is a complete reverse (and practical mockery) of what was expected
Examples of use / misuse of Ironic you can give your boyfriend.
(because you are right and will WIN! :) )

If a diabetic crosses the street and is run over by a truck carrying insulin, then it's ironic.

"One issue of Mad Magazine showed Alfred E. Neuman face-down in the desert, crushed to death by a parachuted crate of first aid supplies. Now THAT was ironic!"
(killed by the exact thing that could have saved his life = opposite)

havent you ever heard the alanis morisette song?
"its like a thousand spoons when all you need is a knife"
"a traffic jam
when youre already late
a no smokkking sign
on your cigarrette break"
"its meeting the man of your dreams
and then meeting his beauutiful wife"
i dont think it is coincidence because he thought about it and did it on purpose. right? but i dont think it's considered ironic either because...well, it's just not that type of situation. so i think its neither. you are both wrong.
it sounds like he did it despite you. Neither. Definitely not Ironic.
It's neither!
It's more like "defiance" - you told him not and he "just so happens" did.
