Seriously, it sounds silly but I cannot find who engaged in the first strike. In the events happening this week, no previous history please, did Israel strike Gaza first or was that retaliation? The news everywhere is only talking about casualties etc and not giving the timeline. Yes I'm late but please just a simple answer!

Hamas has been shooting rockets into Israel for months, daily. No one says anything. Hamas fires from populated, civilian areas thus evading retaliation. I'll keep it simple. Hamas fires. Hamas fires. Hamas fires. Hamas fires. Hamas fires. Hamas fires. Israel fires back nailing their demon possessed leader. BAM!! Hamas cries "no fair". Israel's neighbors cry "who do you think you are defending yourself like that?"
Your confusion is because American and British media don't report attacks on Israel, but they jump all over any reaction by Israel. The Jerusalem Post is a good resource for immediate news.
In four days, over 150 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israeli cities. Then, they really got busy. In the next two days over 400 rockets were launched from Gaza.
Of course, the English speaking media weren't interested until Israel started firing back and taking out the Hamas combatants.
