Oh no. The same thing happened to me not too long ago. Ask her if the computer was on a pillow, bed, etc (something other than a desk).
Mine overheated and fried the motherboard. I had to have the hard drive extracted to an external one and the computer was sold on ebay for parts because none of my techie friends said it could be saved.
If she got it for C'mas and it was purchased new at a store like Best Buy, make sure she bought the insurance policy on it...or buy it if it's within 30 days.
Good Luck. Let us know what happened.

I dont think your computer has any problem. this kinds of things happened many times with my laptop
Did she try to pulling the battery out for a bit and then starting the whole thing up again? This has worked for me before.
To be honest sounds a little like it wasn't plugged in and now the battery has died...just check the power cord...start easy and work your way up.
Good luck!
I had the same problem with my Toshiba laptop. Tried fixing it myself with help from some entries from Aussies that had the same problem, but their fixes didn't work. So I took it to the Laptop Rescuer in San Jose. They fixed it. Check with LaptopRescuer.com.
its probably just in standby or hibernate mode. she probably just pressed a key to make it do that or she closed the lid and when she opened it up it just didnt respond. try pressing every key to see if they will turn it back on. and if i cant help just take it to a best buy or circuit city. they can help if i cant. im really sorry if im no help at all.
I would try to unplug the laptop, wait at least a minute or two, replug and see if it still does the same thing.
Take the battery out and then switch it back on again.
