If a person is mentally ill, to the point they will never get the slightest joy out of life, is it alright to end their own life? Should mental illness be treated any differently from other illnesses in this respect?
Update:This is not a personal issue, just curious about people's opinions on this subject and if they feel that mental illness is inherrently different from other types.

This is the silliest question I've ever read on here. There are medications for all mental illnesses as far as I know. Even if the illness has a side effect that is totally debilitating, that certainly doesn't mean this person doesn't get some joy out of life. I've dealt with mental illness for over 40 years now and I've never seen anyone who doesn't have a quality of life sometime and usually when they get their medications balanced out.
I know EXACTLY what you mean.
As much as you wish the answer was "yes, it's okay"....you know deep down it isn't. Not medically, spiritually, emotionally, or anything else.
All you can do is try to hold on one day, no, one hour at a time, even if you feel it's a loosing battle.
Being mentally ill, and knowing that there is not the slightest "joy" out of life, you still have to try your hardest. Why? Because YOU are the only one who can resist ending your life. It all comes down to YOU.
It sucks, I KNOW, it really, really sucks big time. Most people do not understand that someone cannot feel even the littlest of joy. When your life is so empty, even in a room full of people, and the strength it takes to get through each day knowing that the next will be the same, etc.
Time is on your side. Each morning you wake up, is one more day that you've "made it".
There is no answer to this question - at least not one that you would like to hear.
I wish I could help you. Really, I wish I could. Vicki
wow!! what a controversial issue to which you will only get conflicting opinions. #1, how do we know the person is unhappy?? #2 even if mentally ill, how is the quality of life, such as there are different levels of mental illness. A mentally ill person might still have people around who love and care about it, and they might be aware of this and have some joy in their own way. plus I don't think that's for anyone but God to decide. (which makes me a complete hypocrite because I think if someone is going to suffer a long painful terminal illness, like cancer, they should have the option to end their life) but with that situation they are already definitely going to die. a mentally ill person on the other hand, could have many healthy years ahead.
Did Kevorkian not do time for helping people with terminal illnesses off themselves? I don't understand what you mean by should they be treated differently - they sound the same to me.
Nobody is to the point that they will never get the slightest joy out of life - even if the only joy is feeling a thousandth of a percent better than the minute before, it's still a 'slightest joy out of life.'
Anyway, it is always okay to end your own life. Most likely one will affect somebody else by ending their life, but they might also help others by the fact that others will never have to be exposed to their negativity or unhappiness.
I want more details so I can give a good answer..
The brain is a major organ same as your heart for example, so no it should not be treated any differently. If your kidneys fail they would put you on dialysis, if your brain is doing it tough then it should be treated. Course it is never ok to see someone commit suicide, they deserve and should get all the help they need
People who are depressed often use the terms "never" and "always". Depression is amenable to treatment, so see a doctor, who will diagnose whether it is clinical depression, which may require medication and counselling. Because medication can take some time to be effective, practice daily for 20 mins. the meditation technique at http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/ Also see http://www.beattheblues.info/? and www.depression.com/- and the blogs of Shan Eris on "tackling depression" at www.myspace.com
no. try not to commit suicide.it might get so bad where you dont want to live anymore but try to hold on until the very end..it is hard..i know because i was too embarrassed to get help.but finally i got help..try a medicine such as trazodone..you get really dizzy and sleepy but give it time..i wish you the best of luck
He must endure to the very end. Lots of people do, such as paralized people and people who are blind and deaf (I watch Oprah this week). Taking their own life is a bad idea because there's no going back. What if God considers it as murder, that person can end up in a bad place.
You need help, death is not the answer. Every county has a
suicide 800 number, call it.
