I'm trying to put my pictures on my computer (PC laptop) that I had to take in camera RAW for my photography class. When I try to open them up it says that it doesn't support the file type. When I opened it on the mac computers at the building though it did work. Is there something I need to do differently or use a different program? Sorry this whole thing is new to me!

You need to have a RAW converter. Generally, these are associated with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or some other established image editing software as a plug-in. I don't know if Windows image viewer can use a RAW converter.
If you have Photoshop or Elements, go to http://www.adobe.com/ and search for and download the RAW converter for your specific camera, as there are several different converters.
Someone has probably already done this for the computer at school and that's why it works.
For free, google's picasa does an OK job of opening almost any RAW file out there, But it's limited in what it can do. Just save as a jpeg when you are done editing. What happened to the software (CD) that came with the camera? That will open the RAW files for you. use photoshop elements or even better lightroom 4. both have 30 day free trials, no CC required. PCs and Macs do not support RAW files. They supports image formats like jpeg, TIFF and GIFs but not RAW.
I take it your using windows, also what make of camera are you useing.
just google open raw files (insert camera make) with windows (insert xp or vista) other than that
do you have any photo softwear like adobe elements, or did your camera come with a disc you need to load into your pc first?
I am a photographer and I dont use windows sorry
