I'm trying to put my pictures on my computer (PC laptop) that I had to take in camera RAW for my photography class. When I try to open them up it says that it doesn't support the file type. When I opened it on the mac computers at the building though it did work. Is there something I need to do differently or use a different program? Sorry this whole thing is new to me!

That's because you need special software to handle RAW images. You didn't mention your camera brand so, if you have it, install the maker's original software that came with the camera. Since your camera shoots RAW, that software will handle those photos to open them. You may not be able to edit them but you can at least see them.
For free, google's picasa does an OK job of opening almost any RAW file out there, But it's limited in what it can do. Just save as a jpeg when you are done editing.
What happened to the software (CD) that came with the camera? That will open the RAW files for you.
use photoshop elements or even better lightroom 4. both have 30 day free trials, no CC required.
PCs and Macs do not support RAW files. They supports image formats like jpeg, TIFF and GIFs but not RAW.
I agree with Jim A that often the manufacturer's software is the easiest solution. Canon usually comes with Digital Photo Professional. Nikon comes with View NX. The free programs can convert, but often do very little editing. Nikon likes to sell you Capture NX for serious RAW editing.
Download picasa(free from google) it will read RAW files and is good for arranging and cataloging your pics. It also has does some minor editing. I use it when I'm too lazy to use photoshop.
