Cataract surgery is not laser surgery. They insert a very small probe into the eye that uses ultrasound to break up the cataract and vacuum out the particles, a new lens is then inserted through the same incision, no stitches are typically used. They give you a mild sedative through an IV you are awake, you just don't care and most likely will not remember any of it afterward. Most surgeons do the surgery in 10-15 minutes, although you will probably be there 3-4 hours or so total. There is no pain afterward, usually just a mild irritation like an eyelash for about 24 hours.
