Considering a very clean 1985 Eldorado as a weekend cruiser/fun car. The motor is the 4.1 and has been rebuilt 3k ago. The car runs smoothly, drives beautifully, but has really no "get up and go." I have read that these cars are underpowered. On the freeway ramp I pressed the pedal to get up speed, and I heard some slight clattering or popping as the engine built speed -- it was not a metallic sound - and I did not hear it at highway speed, in town driving, or at idle. The car runs beautifully, starts beautifully, no smoking, no leaks. Is this a normal trait of these Eldorados? The owner said the car has always performed this way and really did not even think there was an issue, and he has been very forthcoming on everything else. Thanks!

It sounds like spark knock maybe. That motor is probably meant to use a higher octane gas which would prevent that from happening under load.
HI
It sounds like it might need to have the timing looked at.. That could be the reason for no power and the clattering / popping you were hearing.
good luck

the 4.1 is a lousy engine i have had 2 replaced them both with 4.9's. the 4.1 is known for blowing heads. its a good car but and if it economical get it and replace the engine
