Nextel Direct Connect?
Is it possible to get Nextel's Direct Connect phones/services, on a non-contract basis.
I am travelling to the US in a week and i'm thinking this would probably be the cheapest way to communicate between friends etc who would also have the Nextel handsets, can this be done on a temp pay as you go kind of thing? or only contract. If not can anyone suggest the cheapest way to call and speak to friends/family over phone/mobile/cellphone system?

Look into Boost Mobile. The same as Nextel, but no contract required since it's prepaid.
boost mobile is the prepaid nextel service. they have phones that are like 30$ its not the best lookin phone but to only use for a short while is cost efficent. depending on how long u are going to be here u can do the $1 a day plan that will give u unlimited direct connect for $1 only on the days that u use it. so u can put just $10 on the acct and u will be fine for 10 days if u dont use the cell part. and also i believe when u buy the phones that they come with a $10 credit
