I recently upgraded from a D70 to a D90 and it is just a dream to use. Personally, I use a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-5.6 VC lens to be able to capture landscapes and telephoto shots with just one lens.
The D90 is superb! It does cost more (about $1000 for just the body, new), but the investment is worth it. Unless you get a great deal on the D80 (10.2Mp), and get it new, I'd recommend going the D90 path.
Don't go used. The warranty is not transferable. Invest in the best you can afford and go new, lens, camera, whatever.

The d90 is an excellent camera, and if you get it with the 18-105 lens, you will have a great piece of equipment.
I would like to get one myself.
Do NOT even bother to look at any nikon below the d80.
There is even a group for d90 users on Redbubble.
