Here's the story.... I have a 1995 VW golf mk3 GL. 5 speed, 228k miles.
lately, after driving for about 30min, or when the car is nice and warm, it completely stalls out and dies. After which, it wont start up.
If I wait a couple hours, it starts up and runs like new. It never shows any symptoms of anything going bad, it just stalls. Usually happens when I'm at fwy speeds.
just had a full tune up done....don't know what it could be.
I was going to throw a fuel pump on it, but they're over $300 for the part....a bit pricey unless I know for sure its the problem.
Anything helps....I just had to get towed home and am now out of a full days work. Want to fix this asap.

before you waste money on a part that is not needed, run a test on the pump. check the pressure out of it. if that is below the spec, replace it. your issue may be one with vapor lock. it is not as common with efi but it still can happen.
i had a similar issue with my 1990 toyota supra, after it got warm it would stop running. turned out my issue was the cam position sensor (similar to a distributer). if at all possible i would try to get the car to advanced auto parts or some place that checks for engine codes for free. the 1995 was a transition year as the late models have the obd2 system which tells you the codes with a code reader, the obd1 system requires a paperclip and jumping 2 terminals and counting how many times the check engine light flashes.
this explains the procedure to get the engine codes:
