Ok. The x8xx series within NVidia is never a bad direction... the 8800 variants and 9800 variants were the top of those particular lines. When you get to the newer NVidia cards... the GeForce 1xx, 2xx, 3xx, 4xx... again, shooting for a second number higher than 6 is the way to go... but you will be hard pressed to find one that is a lower revision than MXM 3.

In the ATI/AMD camp... believe it or not, you want to look again at the second number. a 2 is the bottom of the series, a 9 is the top. So... just as an example, an ATI Radeon 4250 would be a slow entry level chipset, while an ATI Radeon 4650 would be much faster, and much better for gaming. But again... the newer and better cards are going to be MXM 3.

That is not a hard and fast... MXM Upgrade has a MXM 2 NVidia GTX 280 for sale, as well as an ATI 4670. Neither is cheap, but you can't expect them to be.

Find out if the card is user-serviceable or not. If it is, you will be sent the part and can install it yourself by taking apart the laptop computer, removing the old video card and putting the new one in. This one is used by apple so you know you cant go wrong. Has half of last ones memory (512 MB). But still high end for a laptop. These cards would be great choices for Starcraft 2 as well as many new titles like Modern Warfare 3. These would be the best choices even though they may be a bit costly.

First one is better costs less but consumes more power than the second one.
