I currently work for a design build company in Phoenix, AZ: Pankow Construction. (www.pankowconstruction.com) I originally went to Arizona State University for Architecture which is in the same school as interior design and a lot of my core classes and elective were interior design. I always thought I'd graduate college and work for a big architecture firm or start my own, but I was lucky enough to get a job relevant to my degree during school. I've been here for 2 years now and enjoy working for a small firm. I still get to do a lot of architecture and interior design even though it's mainly a construction firm. Working for a small firm has allowed me to explore other options in the business world. My advice is to keep your options open, I went into school with a very specific scope of work I wanted to do but found myself somewhere else and now even question if design is something I still want to pursue after seven years. Take electives in other topics completely unrelated to design. Hope this helps, good luck and have fun.
