I'm supposed to be feeding my neighbors cats while they are gone for a couple of days. Every time that I go over there, though, the bag of cat food has been ripped to shreds, and the cat food plastic container has been opened. Today, I went over to check and the raccoon stole the lid, so I brought the food home with me. I'm worried that he might destroy other stuff around my neighbors' house. What should I do???

I would just keep the food over by your house, inside...they are very smart, and as long as there is food, they will get into it...I have a racoon that got into our our lean-to and would go after the horse treats..(or at least he did-he would chew and scratch on the container until he made a little hole) then when I put it up high so he couldn't reach it, he peed all over the place...what a turd...can't stand them buggers...
Well it depends on what U think is better, U could always set traps for the raccoon, or in a more humane way U could Call Ur local Animal Control, they Usually come out for free.U Could also put the pets In Ur House with the food, raccoons are VERY SNEAKY creatures so be crafty.
This Raccoon is getting way too comfortable and too used to people. Call a wildlife reahbilitator or a wildlife relocator in to catch it and remove it from the area. One other thing you can do is get a plastic tub with a lid. The one to get is a Rubbemaid container with a lid that has to be pinched to get it off (the flat lid kind).
get a better lid or put the food inside the house... bring the cat to your house and put the food there and keep guard against raccoons.
but what does this have to do with cats? doesnt it primarily belong in a raccoon category or general animals category?
Get a BIG Dog and have him watch the cat food??????? On 2ND thought, then you'd have to watch the dog wouldn't you. Sorry OK I got it after making a long, time consuming, frustrating search that resulted in many sleepless nights and no food or drink for countless days here you go.
http://www.thewildones.net/raccoons.htm Oh by the way. I could have invented this myself sooner then it took to find it. But I didn't know racoons couldn't climb!
maybe a new container. we have coons over here and they sleep in our trash cans! they open the lids and sleep in there! they rip open our bags and throw food all over the ground. they are real pests!we got new lids on out trash cans and they cant get in there, aha! so maybe a locking on lid will help. and if they start tearing up other things id call animal control
Just make sure that all fooood items are stored in a shed or a garage or at your house all those guys want is something to eat .. as long as there is food around they will be there to make a mess
Try to get a new container with a better locking lid. or try putting the catfood inside the house.
you might want to call animal control, check around the house to see how this racoon is getting inside.
that is very strange that the racoon went into the house and into a cabinet to get cat food out. hopefully it isn't rabid.
you will desire to call animal administration and spot in case you may get somebody to seize them for you and then take them to a park or someplace comparable and do a launch. Or call a community organic international rehabber on your area (you will discover out from animal administration, a community puppy save would know, a vets place of work, etc) and that they might pop out on your place to seize them at no fee just to sidestep you killing them. they don't would desire to die for any reason whilst they might in simple terms as relatively be relocated. good success saving them. If babies are youthful, they might desire to not chew. in simple terms beware for mama because of the fact she would have the capacity to be very protecting. i'm hoping you will detect a rehabber rapid to choose the region.
